When Cameron Emmanuel wrote Favourite Person, he had no idea the lyrics would one day become the soundtrack to his own love story. At the time, it was just another deeply personal track—written for someone else during a different chapter of his life.
But life, like music, has a rhythm of its own. And sometimes, the notes lead you somewhere unexpected.
In the heart of Durban, a city that pulses with culture and creativity, this song would soon evolve into something more—a duet, a connection, and ultimately, a proposal.

Favourite Person Was Just a Song—Then It Became Theirs
Cameron’s musical journey began early. Surrounded by the timeless sounds of the Bee Gees, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Beatles, he strummed his first chords at just 8 years old. By 16, he was writing songs and mastering the keys. Inspired by artists like Khaya Mthethwa, who later became a mentor, Cameron dreamed of creating music that told real stories.
Lequicia Astrid was on her own path—a powerhouse vocalist and former winner of Chatsworth’s Got Talent. But when she stepped into the studio at Wave Productions, she was still reeling from the loss of her mother. Cameron offered her a list of songs to choose from for a collaboration.
One song stood out.
Favourite Person.
She didn’t know it was written with another woman in mind. But when she sang it, it felt like her story too.
“It’s funny,” she later said. “It was written for someone else. But when we sang it together, it became ours.”
A Beat Made on TikTok and a Love Found in Harmony
The story behind Favourite Person only adds to its charm. The beat was first produced live on TikTok by DJ Keys (David Govender), a Durban-based DJ known for his instinctive style. Viewers watched in real-time as he created the melodic base of what would soon become a love anthem.
Days later, Cameron and Lequicia met in the studio to add lyrics and harmonies. With each verse they wrote, something deeper was unfolding—musically and emotionally. What began as a collaboration became a connection.
Then, the unexpected:
Cameron proposed. And Lequicia said yes.

Favourite Person Is Everyone’s Song Now
Since preview clips began circulating online, Favourite Person has resonated with listeners everywhere. Fans praise the song’s emotional honesty, chemistry, and lyrics that speak to love found in the most surprising places.
“I didn’t want to chase a hit,” Cameron explains. “I wanted to write something real. Favourite Person did that for us—it captured our story in a way that even surprised me.”
“Love doesn’t always announce itself,” Lequicia adds. “Sometimes it waits quietly, in the background, until you’re ready to hear it.”
