Apollo Secondary School in Collier Avenue, Umhlatuzana Township, south of Durban, is celebrating a major boost to its academic resources following a generous sponsorship of R690,000 from the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT). The funds have been allocated specifically for the complete upgrade of the school’s Information Technology (IT) department, marking a significant step toward improving digital literacy and access for its learners. The school officially launched their newly revamped state-of-the-art IT centre on Wednesday, 9 April 2025.

Apollo Secondary equips learners
The sponsorship covered the installation of new computer equipment, upgraded software, improved internet connectivity, and essential training for both students and educators. School Principal Mr. Selvan Moodley expressed deep gratitude for the contribution, saying: “This generous support will not only modernise our IT infrastructure but also ensure that our learners are equipped with skills that are essential in today’s tech-driven world.” Moodley said that Apollo Secondary is the only school in the Durban suburb that offers both IT and Computer Applications Technology (CAT) as subjects since 2006.
SAMCT committed to upliftment
Mr Gaff Osman, pictured above, from the SAMCT said the donation forms part of their commitment to uplifting communities through education and access to technology.
“We believe that investing in the youth is investing in the future. Empowering learners with digital skills is key to creating long-term opportunities,” said Osman.
Said Osman: “We are living in an era of rapid technological advancement and schools are not only expected to offer computer-related subjects, but to also have in place facilities capable of meeting the technological demands of the future.
“For many this is an impossible dream, while others – such as Apollo Secondary – battle to make do with obsolete and outdated equipment.”
The sponsorship from SAMCT was a means to remove the frustration of excessive cost implications to keep abreast of developments in the industry and evolving needs of society. Apollo Secondary continued to keep abreast with the times even though they would use computers that were almost a decade old. Learners would share computers too and were not able to work independently which hindered their academic growth and excellence.
With the generosity of SAMCT learners at Apollo Secondary can now remain more confident of their abilities in the field of IT and computer related fields.

Helping regardless of race or religion
Mr Osman said the SAMCT was confident that this sponsorship would afford learners the opportunity to maintain the high standards they are sure these learners would set.
The SAMCT was created in 2008 as a result of a partnership between the Old Mutual Unit Trusts and Al Baraka Bank for the marketing and distribution of a suite of Shariah compliant funds. The SAMCT delivers assistance throughout South Africa to assist organisations regardless of race or religion.
Osman concluded by saying that they at the SAMCT were pleased and felt privileged to be able to play a role in empowering learners of Apollo Secondary School and the next generation of IT and computer engineering professionals.
Moodley added: “This act of generosity serves as a shining example of how faith-based organisations can create lasting change in communities, bridging gaps and paving the way for a more connected and inclusive educational environment.”
