Drugs with an estimated street value of over R160 000 were confiscated by Durban police after an intensive intelligence-driven operation recently. Over 5000 heroin capsules were confiscated, they were destined for distribution in the Newlands and surrounding areas, north of Durban.

Drugs stash distribution thwarted

Specialized Metro Police units revealed that the delivery of this drugs stash in the North West suburbs of Durban was thwarted due to intense investigations and planning. Durban Metro Police Spokesman, Colonel Boysie Zungu confirmed that the “known drug distributor”, a former club owner, was arrested in possession of the heroin on Sunday, 4 May 2025.

Target markets lose drugs

Police swooped in on the suspect who was travelling on Petroport Northbound along Queen Nandi Drive while allegedly attempting to deliver the drugs. Colonel Zungu said their task teams were now closing in on the remainder of this drug ring and warned further arrests were imminent. “The process of these drugs reaching its target markets was halted. We are confident that the outstanding suspects will be arrested very soon.” Zungu confirmed that the former nightclub owner was a “major supplier” for the greater Durban area and his arrest meant a major blow for the drugs business in the city.

Drugs plague Durban city

In addition to the 5 013 heroin capsules, police also seized a CZ 75 pistol which has its serial number filed off as well as 17 live 9mm rounds and a magazine. Zungu said that this was indeed a victory against the unscrupulous drug cartel, which was plaguing the city of Durban. “Durban Metro Police, in collaboration with the Counter Narcotics Unit, have made significant strides in disrupting drug trafficking in our city. The arrest is one of many conducted by the Durban Metro Polices Drug Team intelligence-driven operation targeting this known drug distributor. This successful operation demonstrates our commitment to keeping our streets safe and protecting our communities from the harm caused by drugs,” he explained.

Telltale Signs of Heroin Capsule Use
  • Heroin, when taken in capsule form, can be harder to detect than when injected, but there are still distinct physical, behavioural, and psychological indicators. Physically, users may appear drowsy, with drooping eyelids, pinpoint pupils (even in dim light), flushed skin, and slurred speech. They might also complain of nausea, constipation, or itching. Track marks may not be visible, but users often have dry mouth, nosebleeds, or frequent sniffing if the powder is crushed and snorted.
  • Behaviorally, heroin users often show sudden mood swings, secrecy, social withdrawal, and a lack of motivation or hygiene. Personal belongings may go missing to fund the addiction, and work or school performance usually declines. Financial instability and erratic sleep patterns—either excessive sleeping or nodding off at odd times—are also common.
  • Psychologically, users may display confusion, memory lapses, anxiety, or depression. They may become evasive when questioned or defensive about their behavior. Paraphernalia such as gel capsules, burnt spoons, cotton balls, or pill crushers may be hidden in their rooms or belongings.
  • While no single sign confirms heroin use, a combination of these symptoms often signals a problem that should not be ignored. Early intervention can be life-saving.
