Celebrating Madiba’s Legacy with Joy and Movement with Solly Singh, PRO of the event
The Elim Senior Citizens Sports Day held at Zaccarine Grounds brought laughter, legacy, and lively movement to the forefront once again, reminding us all that age is merely a number when the heart is full of purpose.
Now in its 25th year, the annual event is more than a sports day—it’s a living tribute to heritage, unity, and the enduring strength of our elders. Born from the vision of the late Mano Pillay, a passionate community servant, this day continues to unite clubs, families, and communities through indigenous games and inclusive activities.
This year’s event held even deeper meaning, falling just days after Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18. Many clubs extended the celebration by dedicating 67 minutes of service—from volunteering to helping elders with mobility—to honour Madiba’s selfless legacy.
The Power of Indigenous Games and Intergenerational Bonds
Participants lit up the field with games like amagende (traditional throwing), walking relays, and mini soccer—reigniting childhood joy and community spirit. The focus wasn’t on fierce rivalry but on fun, connection, and cultural pride.
“Our seniors are not just elders—they are symbols of resilience and tradition. This day reminds younger generations of where we come from and how important it is to carry these stories forward.”
